The phi coefficient is a measure of the association between two dichotomous variables - that is, variables that have only two possible values, for the purposes of this calculator 1 or 0.
For example, you could have this set up to determine whether there is an association between gender (X) and games console ownership (Y):
Male = 1
Female = 0
Owns a games console = 1
Doesn't own a games console = 0
